My favorite part of our wedding was the after party, but I guess the most important part would have to be the ceremony.
We had a full Catholic mass for the ceremony and it was about an hour and 15 minutes or so. Supposed to be an hour, but we had to delay a bit due to craziness. Keep on reading people - it wasn't because we were nervous and had cold feet or anything.
This is an important factor in this story - you can see here that my dress and the bridesmaid's dresses are strapless.
This picture just makes me laugh so I included it. I look so awkward. Why did he make me do this?!
The ceremony started with the grandparents and parents being seated. Then the readers walked down the aisles. Then A and one of his best men went up to the front. And next came the groomsmen + bridesmaids. This is where it gets interesting.
After the first bridesmaid walked down (pictured above), the church wedding coordinator stopped the rest from walking down. All Catholic churches conduct weddings differently, and this one just so happened to have a rule that no one in the wedding party could wear a strapless dress. Sorry, charlie - that's not going to fly with me.
I tried on dresses with straps - I actually REALLY wanted one. They just didn't look good on me. I got over it because my dress was pretty much perfect. Same for the bridesmaids. The dresses we ended up with came with straps, but they were those super skinny spaghetti straps that just didn't look right, so I made them tuck them in. And SERIOUSLY - what difference does a spaghetti strap make when it comes to modesty? NOTHING. ZERO DIFFERENCE.
Back to the story - so she stopped them from walking down and demanded that they all put their straps on. My sister took charge (she has that type of personality, she's not afraid to be a betch when needed) and said absolutely not. You see, I was currently in the back in tears because I had forgotten my straps at home. (I bought lace straps that matched my dress just in case they made me wear them during the ceremony.) We had a friend bringing them, but she was running late. Little Miss Modesty refused to go on with the wedding until I had them and the bridesmaids put on theirs.
And yes - this is all happening while one lone bridesmaid is already up on the altar. Neat!
I missed this whole thing, but have been told by various sources about what happened next.
LMM was having her hissy fit and said something about how it's a rule in that church that you have to have straps because that's how Father Norbert wants it. My sister said something bitchy (I can only assume) and LMM spouted back "This is Father Norbert's church and he can do what he wants."
That pushed my sister over the edge enough to say scream "This is God's church!"
My sister won that argument and the wedding resumed.
Added note - you should all check this post again tonight to see her response to this. I swear that her comments are funnier than my posts. She also likes to correct me on things, and since I wasn't there during that whole fight, I'm looking forward to reading her portion of it.
The ceremony began and started off like most Catholic weddings do. Nothing to report there.
Then he called me Lindsey. Common mistake, I'm used to it, but you think that during our wedding he could get it right. For those confused, Lindsey is my maiden name and people always see it and assume it's my first name. I told A not to say anything. Then he did it again. Father Norbert then could tell that A and I were arguing and I'm pretty sure he thought we were about to call off the wedding.
Laughs all around from the guests and we resumed.
Then he called me Katherine. After the ceremony he told me that he had just been counseling a sexually abused girl named Kaitlyn and he got confused that we had the same name, so he decided to call me Katherine.
1. That makes no sense.
2. Thanks for telling me a super depressing story on my wedding day!
Another interesting fact - they almost wouldn't let us get married in the church because we had 20 people in our wedding party. They approved it, but only the best men and matron/maid of honor could stand up there with us because 20 would have been "distracting." Then 10 days prior to the wedding, I sent in everyone's names and standing order and she forgot they approved it and told me we could no longer get married there. LET ME TELL YA - That was a fun day.
Pretty much describes how everyone felt. WILL THIS EVER END?!
Someone was excited!
"Did he call you Lindsey twice?!"
"Did I hear him call you Katherine?!"
After this picture was taken, he told A's mom that he would let the strapless dresses slide because so many of our guests were Catholic. All of A's side was (slash ALL of South Louisiana is) but not much of mine were, so that just makes me laugh. But I want to know what would have happened if he didn't let it "slide!" And don't I just look like such a slut up there in that SUPER revealing dress?! Totes needs straps.
And then I turned into a HUGE brat when it took 20 minutes to bustle my dress. Future brides? Skip the train. That shiz SUCKED. It came out at the start of my dancing and I just held it the rest of the night. I was not going to miss out on any more time!
And this is where I should go back and proof-read this mess of a post, but A just asked me why I take so long to post every day, so I'm hitting publish without reading it. Welcs.

I can't believe they weren't going to let you go strapless!!! The dresses are very pretty and very classy. Not like you all look like hoochies just because there are no straps!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos!
I wish I had such a hilarious wedding day story!! I know it wasn't funny at the time, but it makes for a great story, and you are a really good story teller!
ReplyDeleteI am literally dying laughing. If it makes you feel any better I took a break from grading/reading my kids GOD AWFUL essays and your un-revised post is a million times better.
ReplyDeleteWhat would wedding days be with out a story to tell.
Wow, shug! What a day. This has me even more intrigued about the Catholic religion. "I feel that this is not okay at all, but since most of y'all are Catholic, what the hey."
ReplyDeleteI like your the pic that you said you look so awkward in, where you are looking up to the sky ... it's like you are saying, "Dear Jesus, thanks for convincing him to marry me ... let's hurry up and do this thang before he changes his mind!" Haha!
such a little hussy. i'd been wondering how you pulled off strapless when you mentioned it was a catholic wedding. don't get me wrong 20 is a large number but the church looks like it could easily accommodate that, seriously who writes these rules!? mad props to your sister though
ReplyDeleteThe priest that married also had trouble remembering my name. I told him he could look at the check that I wrote to reserve the church since that had my name on it. Come on!
ReplyDeleteOmg! What a bunch of craziness! I would have turned into major bridezilla.. I mean he can't remember your actual name? That's just terrible. I think all of the dresses are gorgeous and not slutty AT ALL haha. Love love love all of the pictures :)
ReplyDeletehussy little lady. Do you hate me because I laughed out loud at this??
ReplyDeleteGirl you ain't lying about Southern Louisiana. One of my best friends works at a Catholic Church and she tells me the craziest stories. The wedding looked so pretty. And I LOVE your dress.
ReplyDeleteAt least you can look back and laugh about it now. I loved your dress though, even though your shoulders were showing.
ReplyDeleteGosh, LINDSEY... you are such a skank ball....... ;)
ReplyDeletealso, this is the best post I've ever read by you. I have so much to say, I just can't say it all!!! LOL love youu
what a struggle, Linds... glad you made it through and didn't get divorced day of!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is crazy that they are that stickler about those things! Baptist churches have their rules but I've never heard of a dress rule or a what you can't wear, rule!
ReplyDeleteI am dying over here! We also had a full Catholic Mass for our wedding. The priest does not like flower girls so he was really pointed about making sure we knew he didn't like them (because he said no one ever fully cleaned up the mess) but never said that we could NOT have one. So, we had one (actually my nephew who threw flowers out of a top hat). The first thing the priest says when I get to the front of the church and we walk up to the altar: THE KID THREW FLOWERS! Um ok then, happy day to you too sir! And for the record, we cleaned up every last one of the fake rose petals!
ReplyDeleteSo, Mass continues, and then he forgets the homily. Like legit forgot it. Went right from the Gospel reading to the vows. So I whisper..Father, no homily? And he goes, huh, never did that before and then just goes on with the vows, so we got no homily (although I think the guests were happy because it meant that Mass was only 45 minutes).
We eventually finish up and then as he is introducing us, he mispronounces our last name, despite double checking with us right before he announced it on the correct pronunciation. Good times.
I am mostly over all of the issues, but I still just shake my head at how freaking difficult churches can be sometimes.
oh my word! girl you are a trooper I would have lost it and I thought my southern baptist preacher was a little cray for not liking my short rehearsal dinner dress, geez.
ReplyDeletewe had a full catholic mass too!! we really have a lot in common. and i love the church! so pretty and filled with light!
ReplyDeleteoh my holy shit. You think maybe they could have told you about those straps BEFORE the wedding day???? Wow. You should have said, "Shit. I don't have on any underwear under my dress - you think God can tell and wants me out of his church for that too?" And Catholics wonder why our numbers our dwindling?? Because we make big deals out of things like naked shoulders but we can't seem to screen our pedofile priests a little closer before we hire them. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteWOW. I would have flipped my shit! I was a junior bridesmaid in a wedding that was Catholic mass and holy crap. As a 9 year old Baptist, I had no idea what in the hell was going on, haha. You look beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for you to tell this crazy story! That lady was legit scared of el padre. First off...we knew they said you had to have straps and we didn't leave them at home on purpose. We are just the Lindsey fam and we forget crap. I tried explaining this to crazy lady and that we had a neighbor rushing home to get them but the ceremony started so could we just go ahead get married minus two tiny straps?!! I however had previously decided there would be NO WAY, NO HOW I was wearing those things.
ReplyDeleteI tried patiently reasoning with her but when she said this was Father Norbert's church I just lost my shit. I also knew my little sister was crying on her wedding day because of this woman and I just had it. I'm a sales rep for a reason....I get it done:) What others will call "major betch" I call "make it happen". What I don't get is I too was married in the Catholic church and none of those crazy rules applied. They need to agree on some stuff and WHO THE HELL CARES??!! I have seen people in work out gear, in jeans, and in the great town of Fouchon....well, I just wont get into that get up. I'm talking Charlotte Rousse meets Fredericks of Hollywood.
In conclusion, the number of bridesmaids you have and awful spagetti straps should not decide if you can get married or not. And thou shall get a pass if the priest dosen't even KNOW YOUR NAME!! That should be in the ten commandments.
Oh and you were SUCH a brat with the whole bustling thing but I think I was too...it comes with being a bride. I just wished I had jello shots to shove down your throat at that moment though!
I love everything about this post and everything about this comment. Both of you are wonderfully funny. I will also say that NO one in the church really had any clue all of this was happening. However long it felt like it was taking, it didn't seem that long in the moment. Besides, we were all blown away when Kaitlyn walked out looking GORGEOUS :).
DeleteHA! This entire story is golden. Golden! Thank God I got the memo that strapless means Slut McSlutty before I get married. You saved me from that one.
ReplyDeleteHahaha I seriously am laying in bed laughing like an idiot. The best part is that I can picture you telling this story which makes it 100000x better. I love you and at least you'll have fun stories to tell the grand babies later in life. :)
ReplyDeleteLindsey Katherine, screw putting a bow on it, you need to PUT ON SOME CLOTHES!!! Huss.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your sister's comment - more golden than Willy Wonka's tickets.
Stop being so scandalous and popular! ;)
ReplyDeleteKatherine Kaitlyn Lindsay you little strapless bride, you!! At least you were gorgeous- that's a no brainer... but I would have had a complete 5 year old temper tantrum had this happened to me!! But your sister is my hero. I love it.
ReplyDeleteHoly gorgeousness! You are beautiful and that dress is amazing!! The thing about catholic weddings is that they tend to last a while, which allows the priest extra time to slip up with his words.
ReplyDeleteLMAO!!! at your sister!! Epic!
Adrienne
My goodness, how dare you not have that extra sliver of a strap to cover you up. I would have been SOL if that was me because I don't have a sister to throw down on my behalf. Trains freaking suck, I hated having mine bustled too. Then someone stepped on it during the dance and the top layer came loose so I still had a train I was carrying around. At least you looked beautiful and it makes for good memories! :)
ReplyDeletehaha this is super funny! I grew up catholic and decided against doing a full catholic mass.
ReplyDeleteomg jello shots! that would be amazing! seriously all I can think about now at work...
ReplyDeleteKatherine Lindsey! You little hussy! You looked like such a slore during your wedding. You should be ashamed. And shame on you for having so many friends! No church should have let you get married. Lordy lordy. THIS IS GOD'S CHURCH!
ReplyDeleteAlso what the hell?! They can suck it.
And your sister's comment above? Dying. This post is perfect. Pretty pretty please write a memoir. Tina Fey would be so jealous that Bossypants wasn't as funny.
If it makes you feel any better, the Southern Baptist preachers aren't doing much better. Sure, he knew my name. But he said that after meeting with us & blah blah he thinks we're "probably gonna make it." Glowing endorsement, right there. Staci + Taylor= probably gonna make it since 2013.
ReplyDeleteAlso your sister & my sister are twin souls.
All of this is why this Episcopalian is not having a church wedding! It looks absolutely gorgeous, but holy stress!
ReplyDeleteAlso, your sister is a wedding super-hero. All girls deserve a ballsy friend like that in their wedding day!
